Advice for Creatives: Just Start

Stop waiting for the muse or inspiration to strike and create your own momentum.

All throughout high school and college, I would sit for hours in my room staring at the walls or ceiling having no idea what I wanted to do.

I hated being bored (still do!) but without ever starting I would still just be staring at the wall as time ticked by.

For the longest time, I thought some people just got lucky and everything got handed to them on a silver plate.

Maybe that happens for some people but not for the rest of us. I was ignoring the biggest factor that comes with eventual success.

You can't wait around for the mood to strike, inspiration to hit or for everything to perfectly align before you can make a move.

You just have to start. Even if your first project or effort is terrible.

No one's first attempt is great no matter how accomplished they are.

You create your own momentum in life.

This isn't a new idea and I'm definitely not the first one to say it but you need to start, try and fail which is the only way to become good and possibly great.

Once you get started it becomes harder to stop which is a good thing.

It means this project or idea is worth working for and you will keep working at it and polishing it.

One of the few things I would tell my younger self (which she probably would have ignored) is just start.

Even if it looks terrible or lame.

Just start because the process of doing the project will tell you a lot more than just thinking about it for another week, month, year...

Jumpstarting the creative process always feels harder than it should but the results are almost always worth it.

Now that you know my advice for creatives I would like to hear from you.

Let me know if creating even when you weren’t inspired worked for you or if you have other tips and tricks to get the creative juices flowing.
